5 Tips to Get Your Bike Ready for Spring

Bring out the sponge – it’s your time to shine on the bicycle lanes this spring! Here is our guide to get your bike ready in 5 easy steps:
1. Check tire pressure

All bicycle tires slowly lose air pressure and must be refilled regularly. Check the tire pressure before you start cycling. Too low air pressure can damage the tires, make the bike difficult to control and slow to ride.

2. Clean your bike

Besides looking smart and handsome, your bike will also perform best when clean. Wipe it off with a damp cloth, or use some soap water and a dishwashing brush. Keep clear of chain and gears. Be careful not to allow water into the hub, chainwheel and other bearings. If you have an electric bike, be extra careful with the motor and battery.

3. Apply shine!

Treat your bike with some wax when clean. Be careful not to put wax on the brake discs. This can trigger a noice when you use the brakes and lessen the brake force.

4. Oil your chain

The chain and other moving parts of the crankset must be lubricated regularly. Use a round paintbrush to put on degreaser and leave to set for a few minutes. Rinse with water. Wash the chain with a sponge and warm soap water. When the chain is dry it is time to carefully and thoroughly apply a chain lubricant. Wipe off excess oil with a cloth.

5. Adjust Derailleurs

When you have used your bicycle for some time, the gear cable needs to be tightened again for the gears to shift smoothly. You can do a simpler adjustment of the derailleur yourself: Tighten the cable by turning the adjustment screw counterclockwise. Start with half a lap and then do a check-up by shifting through all of your bike’s gear combinations. Make sure the chain moves smoothly and listen for any clicking, popping, or grinding noises, which can indicate drivetrain issues. Be sure to use only very small increments at a time when adjusting. If you are unsure, take your bike to a repair shop.

Thats it! If you have some tips of your own that you would like to share please leave a comment below.

Good luck with your bike and enjoy spring!
